His newest book, The Altar of Pergamon: The Mystery of the Dark Angel and the Future of the World, begins with one of the most unsettling statements in Scripture.
Speaking to the church in Pergamum, Jesus says:
“I know where you dwell, where Satan’s throne is.”
—Revelation 2:13, ESV
Those words were addressed to real believers living in a real ancient city. Pergamum was a prominent center of political power, pagan worship, emperor worship, and spiritual opposition. Towering above the city was the monumental Altar of Pergamon—a massive structure that some have associated with the throne described in Revelation.
For centuries, the altar lay buried.
Then it was excavated, removed from its original location, transported to Germany, and reconstructed in Berlin.
That history alone is fascinating. But Jonathan Cahn asks a far more provocative question: What if the altar’s movement was connected to something larger than archaeology?
What Happens When a Throne Moves?
In his new book, Cahn traces what he believes may be a spiritual pattern running beneath pivotal moments in modern history. The altar becomes more than an ancient artifact. It becomes part of a mystery involving spiritual allegiance, political power, the rise and fall of empires, and forces that cannot be fully explained by what we see on the surface.
This is where our conversation became especially compelling.
Most of us are accustomed to interpreting history through political decisions, military power, economics, personalities, and social movements. Those factors matter. Scripture, however, reminds us that the visible world is not the whole world.
There are ideas behind movements. Beliefs behind systems. Objects of worship behind cultures. And spiritual realities behind some of the battles unfolding before us.
That does not mean we should treat every headline as a hidden biblical code. Discernment requires wisdom, humility, and a firm grounding in Scripture. But neither should Christians become so focused on what is visible that we forget the spiritual dimension of human history.
Cahn’s work challenges us to look more closely.
What was the significance of Pergamum?
Why did Jesus describe it as the place where Satan’s throne was?
What happened after the altar was relocated?
Who—or what—is the Dark Angel?
And what might this ancient mystery reveal about the direction of our world?
What We Worship Shapes What We Build
As I listened to Jonathan explain the mystery, I kept returning to one sobering truth: civilizations are not shaped by policies alone. They are shaped by what their people worship.
An altar represents worship. A throne represents authority. Bring the two together, and we are confronted with a question every generation must answer:
Who—or what—is ultimately occupying the throne?
This question is not reserved for historians, theologians, or world leaders. It reaches into our homes, our institutions, and the formation of our children.
Every culture disciples. Every society teaches its people what is worthy of love, trust, sacrifice, and obedience. When a culture turns away from God, it does not stop worshiping. It simply gives its allegiance to something else.
That is one reason this conversation matters for parents.
We are raising children in a world filled with competing claims about truth, identity, freedom, authority, and human purpose. If we only teach our children how to respond to what they can see, we leave them unprepared to discern the beliefs and spiritual allegiances operating beneath the surface.
Our children need more than rules that control their behavior. They need biblical wisdom that helps them recognize what is shaping their hearts.

The Altar of Pergamon is presented through a fast-moving story involving a skeptic, a cryptic message, an ancient secret, and a search that crosses countries and centuries. But beneath the suspense lies a serious spiritual question:
Could an ancient mystery help us understand the forces influencing the modern world—and what may come next?
