During the high-school years, homeschool parents may consider Advanced Placement (AP) classes or Dual Enrollment as an option for their child. While both have the potential to earn college credit during high-school, the two vary greatly.
The Advance Placement (AP) classes are college level courses offered to high-school students on a more rigorous level. Students desiring to pursue college or a specific field of interest beyond high-school may find these classes appealing. AP classes can be taken online through FLVS or taught by parents who feel well qualified to teach such classes. Oh not again! Your eyes begin to fill with tears. You want to dry them up but the emotions are just too strong this time. That look, you know the one I’m talking about, that look from your once adoring child. That teenager, who once thought you could do no wrong, now seems to only glare at you when you speak to them. You’ve stayed up late reading every blog or article you could find on being your child’s best friend. Every morning you purpose to try the new approach you learned the night before. You’re optimistic, surely this will work. However, after several attempts your frustration builds, discouragement begins and you find yourself wanting to give up.
The mental dialogue begins. I call it the blame game. If you can just identify who has the problem then you could get some emotional relief. All you want is for that sweet precious child to look and speak to you with that “I love you so much” attitude, the one you had enjoyed for so many years. When I read about the Proverbs 31 woman I see a life well lived. For many women, they interpret this passage as something that must be done all in one day or season. Truth is, this describes a woman’s life in totality… not a day.
Let’s begin by defining “consider.”

A friend once said, “Busy always seems to find you.”
Does busy seem to find you, too?
We hear, “Don’t be too busy now”, or “you’re too busy.” These statements can cause inner turmoil for many. How can someone know if you are too busy? Could it be that we have different callings, drive levels, and interests? What one person feels is too busy may be the perfect balance for someone else. After all, God has equipped us with individual passions, skill sets, and drive.
Busy for the sake of being busy accomplishes little. The key is not so much. Are you too busy, but are you busy with the things God has called you to do? Or are you busy trying to avoid dealing with something in your life? Hurt, conflict, unmet needs, or neglect, maybe? Are you busy chasing after a career or a relationship? (more…)
Many of you have friends or relatives that homeschool, and are perhaps considering it for your own family. Allow me to assist you while I unpack some of the most common questions I am asked:
1) What exactly is homeschooling?
Home education, as defined by Florida law, is “sequentially progressive instruction of a student directed by his or her parent or guardian in order to satisfy the requirements of Statute 1003.21 and 1002.41.” The law is broad, giving parents quite a bit of freedom to direct their child’s education. Children of all ages are home educated across the state, and many are entering college straight from their courses of study at home.
2) How do I legally homeschool in Florida?
Home education is one of five ways to satisfy Florida’s compulsory attendance law. Statute 1003.01 (13) gives parents the choice of achieving regular school attendance through one of these provisions:
• Public school
• Parochial, religious or denominational school
• Nontraditional private school
• Home-education program
• Private tutoring program
Four of these options are in the private sector — ultimately, parents choose the setting, curriculum, opportunities and educational experiences. In all cases, a child turning 6 before February 1 of the school year is subject to compulsory attendance and must attend school regularly the entire term.
